Wokstar international Noodle CafeWokstar Review
April 2008

I decided to take my wife and visiting cousin to a new South Maui restaurant in Kihei this past weekend. Having heard rave reviews from friends, I thought it was time for us to see if it lived up to our expectations.

Wokstar International Noodle Cafe lived up to its previous reviews by serving delicious meals at incredibly low prices. My only regret about this casual restaurant is that it hasn't been here for years. Our island is desperately in need of dining establishments like this one. The portions were more than adequate, the food healthy and fresh, the service friendly and quick, the ambiance young and vibrant, the kitchen clean and lively, and the prices extremely low. Another positive characteristic that works for the customer is that they don't serve alcohol, but will allow you to bring it. Foodland is next door, which helps you cut your bill down even more.

Wokstar is open early (7am) for breakfast, and stays open later than most restaurants on the island (12am). This is especially helpful to the nearby bar patrons located within the same area. Wokstar is located in the "Triangle" off of South Kihei Road, across from Kalama Beach Park, where the big whale is. It's right next door to Life's A Beach, and very close to some great open market shopping.

We tried the Thai Red Curry with Shrimp, Chicken Teriyaki Udon, and Kung Pow with pork, all of which were delicious. There's good reason why this little open-air restaurant is bustling with business within its first month without promotion. Let's hope that more restaurants pop up like this one!

Wokstar International Cafe is located at 1913-D South Kihei Rd in South Kihei.

Chez Paul Review
Memorial Weekend 2007

I had a wonderful dining experience at Chez Paul last night.
It's a very quaint and intimate dining room. It just happens to be Maui's oldest restaurant. They have been open since 1968!

Our first course was a chilled potato-leek soup garnished with fresh chives and pinenuts.
Second course was a light and flaky puff pastry with wild mushrooms, brie cheese, and a port wine sauce.
Third course, a crab and avocado salad on a bed of butter lettuce.
Fourth course, French Onion soup made with Maui sweet onions.
Fifth course, mixed green salad with a mustard-herb vinagrette and goat cheese toast points.
For our sixth course, I had the Filet Mignon with au Gratin potatoes and port wine sauce. (That port wine sauce kicks major butt!) My girlfriend had champagne poached Mahi, Molokai sweet potatoes and a white wine butter-caper sauce.
Wait there's more!
For dessert the carmel apple tart with vanilla ice cream. Also a pineapple tatin with fresh fruit, ice cream and tapioca pearls.

Needless to say, I'm still stuffed to da gills! A very enjoyable time indeed and we were well taken care of. I won't refer a restaurant untill I try it first. So go check 'em out!

Longhi'sLONGHI'S Review
Valentine's 2007

Last night my lovely fiance and I enjoyed our valentine's day meal at Longhi's at the shops of Wailea , in South Maui. Of course, it was packed to the brim with valentine couples looking for good food, wine, and ambiance. Even with all of the commotion and customer traffic, the service was impeccable. Our server was among many Longhi's employees that kept our glasses full, bussed our plates, and made sure our food was on time.

Our experience began with a large portion of pizza bread, oozing with melted cheese, hot peppers and tomato sauce. This is one of the best and dumbest things to bring guests of a restaurant before ordering. We both loved the bread, but it definitely cut into our appetite. We then enjoyed a really interesting endive salad with Italian Gorgonzola , candied macadamia nuts, and a sweet honey-scallion-mint vinaigrette dressing which worked well to cut the bitter Belgian endive leaves. After this, along with a light pinot noir , McMurphy's , we began our entrees . Let me add that we were never rushed through our meal, this being something that is all too often done in most restaurants.

My lady ordered the filet mignon , as I had the Ahi au P oivre . Her filet was accompanied by sauteed red and yellow peppers and a basil butter sauce. The sauce wasn't as interesting as we'd imagined and only barely hinted of basil. The filet was tender, but not quite as good as some of the other filet's in the building. Upstairs at Tommy Bahama's, the quality of the meat is far superior as well as the preparation and sauces. Ruth's Chris is also upstairs and boasts a large menu of amazing steaks. For a great cut of beef, go upstairs to either restaurant.
On the other hand, the Ahi was incredible. Living in Maui, I've learned to stay away from certain fish because I know that it had to be flown in. The yellowfin tuna on this island is freshly caught and always a good bet. The ahi was peppercorn encrusted and seared rare with shitake mushrooms and an unbelievable green peppercorn, garlic, and brandy butter sauce. This is some of the best ahi I've had on the island and a generous portion at that. In contrast, the Ahi dinner upstairs at Tommy Bahama's is not nearly as well prepared as Longhi's.

Although already sufficiently satisfied, we indulged in dessert. Among a multitude of tempting options, we had to go with the chocolate souffle; we were not disappointed. The souffle was fluffy and moist, as it should be, and filled with remarkable hot chocolate. After having experienced too many souffle's to count, I'd say this one was a bit above average. I've had better chocolate souffles and much worse.
As well as some carnations given to my lady upon entering the building, we were given chocolate covered strawberries with our souffle. Longhi's knew how to add the valentine touch.

Looking back, our experience at Longhi's was great. The open air dining room made for a more Maui style dining experience. The prices accurately reflected what we'd been given, though still on the steep side. (Anywhere you dine in Wailea will make your wallet lighter.)

Check out Longhi's in Wailea for some great yellowfin tuna, excellent wine, and Maui open air breezes.
