Maui Picks and Tips

Whether you are looking for Maui bargains, that out of the way Maui secret spot or the place the locals love. Maui picks and tips has something for you. Maybe you'll save that extra money that justifies your trip to Mama's, or maybe you'll find the spot for your next three dinners, either way here is an insiders guide to the best Maui Picks and Tips and the best of Maui secrets.

Cheap Eats - Bargain Maui Restaurants

Honolua Store - 669-6128 - Located in ritzy Kapalua one would not expect to find such a reasonably priced store, and the food is great too. This is a great place to pick up a picnic lunch to take to one of the local beaches. The menu consists of local standard plate lunches , daily specials and sandwiches and hamburgers. Specials are affordable at $5 to $7 with the usual two scoop rice and scoop of mac salad. Sitting on the porch is always enjoyable and the staff is always friendly. Located at 502 Office Rd next to the Ritz Kapalua.

Mama´s Ribs and Rotisserie - 665-6262 - A favorite lunch time stop for local workers, Mama´s serves up roasted chicken, ribs local plates and BBQ sandwiches. Tucked away at the West end of Napili shopping center, it could be easy to miss this great restaurant. You can purchase whole roasted chickens and racks of ribs along with all the sides for a family picnic at any of the nearby beaches or parks. D T Fleming is right up the road and has picnic tables for a great beach side meal. 5095 Napilihau Street next to Napili Market.

Honokowai Okazuya and Deli - 665-0512 - This is hands down my favorite pick for good cheap eats in Maui. This is not really a restaurant, there are a few tables but your chance of getting one is pretty darn slim. The best bet is to call ahead and order for takeout. There is a beach park just up the road with picnic tables or you can take it back to your condo. The lemon caper mahi mahi is to die for, fish and chips are great, teriyaki beef is always a favorite, the tuna sandwich is the best I ever had, the burger is awesome and nothing is over $12! I think you get the picture, I have never ordered anything here that I was not happy with. It is located north of Ka'anapali in Honokowai on Lower Honoapiilani Rd.

The Fish Market Maui - 665-9895 - Located just a few doors down from Honokowai Okazuya on Lower Honoapiilani Road is The Fish Market, a true local gem. If your condo has an oven or a grill this place is great. Go inside and talk with the employees, they have a vast knowledge of local seafood and can help you find exactly what you need. The best part, is that they provide the sauces and marinades and even provide a baking pan so that all you need to do is pop it in the oven for a few and you are ready to go. Try to stop by around noon for the best selection of fresh fish.

Compadre´s Bar and Grill - 661-7189 - One of the best deals in Kahana has got to be Taco Tuesdays at Compadre´s Bar and Grill in the Lahaina Cannery Mall on the back side right across from Aloha Mixed Plate on Front Street. On Tuesday's you will find $1 chicken, beef or bean tacos as well as $3 Coronas and Margaritas. Many Tuesdays will feature bands, and expect to see the local Lahaina scene out in full force. This is a great tip for cheap eats and one of the best party nights in Maui.

Aloha Mixed Plate - 661-3322 - Not really much of a secret anymore, Aloha Mixed Plate is popular with locals and tourists alike. All the seating here is outdoors with the front deck sitting just off the ocean. The best views are found here, but you cannot have liquor on the lower deck. The food is inexpensive with plate lunches, noodles and Hawaiian luau type plates being the favorites. They also have a great happy hour with beers stored on ice.

Moose McGillycuddy's - 667-7758 - While Moose´s is probably one of the more famous Maui restaurants, but did you know that if you stop by a Boss Frog shop you can get coupons for their early bird breakfast? At $1.99 for two scrambled eggs, two strips of bacon and a choice of rice, potatoes or toast it's a steal. Another great Maui bargain offered at Moose's is their daily happy hour from 3 - 6 PM with $1 well drinks, house wine and domestic drafts. After the party shuts down on Tuesdays at Compadre´s, you can head to Moose´s for a five dollar cover and dollar drinks til midnight.

Penne Pasta - 661-6633 - For a great Italian meal in Maui that won't break your wallet, try Penne Pasta in the heart of Lahaina at 180 Dickenson Street. Order from the menu at the counter, choosing from a variety of pastas, pizzas, salads and sandwiches. The best part? Nothing on the menu is more than $14 and wine and beer are available too. Don't expect a romantic table side service meal (there are no waiters), but for great Maui Italian food, this place started by Mark Ellman of Maui Tacos is a great Maui find.
